Sydney Broom, a vibrant 17-year-old student at West Niagara Secondary School (WNSS), couldn’t contain her excitement about the school’s recent grand opening. “It’s like stepping into a whole new world,” she exclaimed, highlighting the school’s spaciousness, modern amenities, and inviting atmosphere.
The grand opening, held on April 4 at 5699 King St., marked a significant milestone for the nearly 19,000-square-metre (202,000-square-foot) three-storey building. While classes commenced in September, the official inauguration took place as the finishing touches, including a state-of-the-art 750-seat auditorium, were completed.
Funded by a $50.3 million investment from the province, with additional contributions from the school board and fundraising efforts, WNSS represents a consolidation of students from Grimsby Secondary School, Beamsville District Secondary School (BDSS), and the former South Lincoln High School. This strategic move aimed to create a vibrant hub for 1,500 teens from West Niagara.
Sumatee Poonwassie, a Grade 12 student, shared her delight in the diverse and enriching environment at WNSS. “It’s a melting pot of talents and interests,” she remarked, contrasting it with her previous experience at BDSS. Sean Hamad, another Grade 12 student, echoed her sentiments, praising the school’s emphasis on artistic programs and opportunities for budding musicians like himself.
Principal Mat Miller emphasized the school’s comprehensive offerings, from traditional academics to specialized courses in fields like manufacturing, computer engineering, and cosmetology. With 100 teachers and 21 support staff, WNSS is poised to support student success across various disciplines.
The grand opening not only celebrated a new chapter for education in Niagara Falls but also heralded a vibrant community where students can thrive academically and creatively. As Sydney Broom aptly put it, “It’s not just a school; it’s a launchpad for our dreams.”
